Located in the center of Buenos Aires, the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires) has been around in one form or another since 1580 when the plot of land was set aside for a church. Today, the Buenos Aires Cathedral consists of a main altar and another 13 chapels and altars, as well as a crypt in the basement level. Some of the famous chapels in the Buenos Aires Cathedral are Capilla del Santisimo Sacramento, Altar de San Martin, Mausoleo del General San Martin, Capilla de Nuestra Senora de la paz, Capilla de San Juan Nepomuceno, Capilla de Juan Luis Gonzaga, Capilla de San Jose, Capilla de San Juan Bautista, and Capilla de Santa Teresa de Avila.
