The protectorate of Wadi El Rayan (وادي الريان) is a valley in the middle of the Fayoum desert, that is now totally covered by two gigantic fresh water lakes, the two lakes have different altitudes, and therefore a waterfall was created where they meet. Wadi El Rayan was formed around 1992 when the government redirected agricultural run-off water towards the valley. Today, Wadi El Rayan has Egypt’s largest water fall.
