Taj Mahal

Completed around 1648, the Taj Mahal (ताज महल) is a monument to the love of Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. It’s sad that the builder lived his last days under house arrest in Agra fort where he could see the Taj Mahal but could never go there. Upon his death he was buried there along side his wife.

Today the Taj Mahal is the major tourist attraction in India, and is a great example of Islamic architecture in India. Made of white marble, the Taj is perfectly symmetrical on all sides. The complex also contains two other buildings used as mosques and mausoleums for Shah’s other wives and servants.
