With nicknames such as The Emerald City, Rain City, Jet City, Gateway to Alaska, and Queen City, Seattle is the largest city in Washington State. The city of Seattle has a population of about 600,000, while the over-all metro area is about 3.5 million, living in a space of around 21,000 square kilometers. The Seattle area has been inhabited for over 6000 years, and was first occupied by European settlers in 1851.
The name Seattle is derived from the name of Chief Si’ahl who was the head of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes in the area. Over the years, Seattle has always served as the leading edge for new industries and technologies, from the early days where it was mainly logging and industrial, to after the great depression when Seattle became the center for aviation industry, till early 2000’s when it became a technology hub, and in most recently a hub for green technologies.
Seattle also has a rich music culture. Jimi Hendrix was born in Seattle, as well as other famous musicians have been based out of Seattle. Today, one can see many Seattle photos on the web and in travel books as Seattle is a popular tourist destination with many tourists taking these Seattle photos. Of course, being in the North West, Seattle rains a lot, and is best to visit in the late spring and summer where there is a higher likely hood of Seattle being sunny and dry.
