Lijiang

Designated as a UNESCO world Heritage Site in 1997, the old town of Lijiang (丽江) and some of the surrounding areas are truly worth the visit. The old town of Lijiang is a maze of old cobblestone streets and houses. Like many Chinese cities in Yunnan, there is a new town and an old town in Lijiang. One interesting note about Lijiang is that after a large earthquake in 1996, the old town (old architecture) was not damaged very much while the new town was completely leveled. This lead to the town being rebuilt in old Naxi architecture which has been known to withstand earthquakes. As a result of all this attention, Lijiang is the most visited town in China.
