Kyoto was the former imperial capital of Japan until 1869 when the imperial court was transferred to Tokyo, Kyoto was also one of the few cities in Japan that did not suffer too much damage during world war II, and is therefore filled with interesting sites to see and visit.
Kyoto has a population of about 1.5 million, and is located in a valley which experiences hot summers and cold winters. Kyoto has a surface area of approximately 828 square kilometers.
