Edfu temple (معبد إدفو) is the second largest temple in Egypt after Karnak temple. Construction on Edfu temple began in 237 BCE by Ptolemy III, and was finished two rulers later on 57 BCE during Ptolemy XII. It is dedicated to the god Horus. Being a relatively young temple, Edfu temple is mostly intact and only had a small portion of it protruding above the sand before it was excavated. As with many ancient Egyptian temples, there is evidence that at some point during history there were attempts at erasing the ancient pharaonic religions (In the Edfu temple photos below, see the black on the ceiling)
