Citadel of Qaitbay

The Citadel of Qaitbay (قلعة قايتباي‎) was built in the 1477 AD on top of the ruins of the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria, in fact, it was built using the ruins of the original lighthouse of Alexandria. The purpose of the citadel of Qaitbay was for the defence of Alexandria and retained this function until 1882 when the British destroyed large parts of it. It was then neglected until 1952 when it was renovated and converted into a Naval museum.
