The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa (مقبرة كوم الشقافة بالاسكندرية) in Alexandria are beleived to have originally been a private tomb for a wealthy family, but was later converted to a private cemetery. The Catacombs of Alexandria comrpise of three levels, the lowest of which is permanently submerged in water and is not open to the public. The cemetery dates back to the 1st century AD and seems to have been used until the 4th century AD. Today, The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa are a major tourist attraction in Alexandria.
