Calgary is the largest city in Alberta, and is the business center of the province. It has a population of just over 1 million which makes it the fifth largest city in Canada. It was first settled by Europeans in 1873. It began to grow in 1883 when the Canadian Pacific Railway reached the city and made it more accessible to migration. It was then incorporated as a city in 1894 and was the center of the Canadian meat industry until 1947 when large reserves of oil were discovered.
