In signs of a very volcanic past, this part of the western desert is called the black desert (الصحراء السوداء) which starts from around Bahariya and continues South for a while, is littered with black volcanic rocks. The black desert is very interesting and is even more interesting when contrasted with the other areas of the desert between the oases.
