Photos from the White Desert - Western Desert - Egypt

The white desert is probably one of the most interesting features in the western desert of Egypt. Consisting of chalk pinnacles that stick out of the desert floor, many interesting shapes are formed that only stimulate the imagination.

The landforms indicate a very wet past for the Western desert of Egypt where the current white desert floor used to be a bottom of a huge lake. As such, you can still find traces of shells and pyrite stones that were formed by the organic matter and lake creatures digging tunnels in the ground. The chalk formations are what's left after the sand is moved by the wind and by the erosion of the wind over the millennia.

The area is also inhabited by many of the small white desert foxes that will generally approach campers to find food. to get an indication of the size of these small creatures, the fox on the right has a chicken thigh bone in its mouth.
