Photos of the Terracotta Warriors - XiAn - China
The terracotta warriors were discovered in 1974 when a group of peasants digging a well, made what was to become one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century when they unearthed fragments of a life sized Terra Cotta Warrior. Excavation of the vault revealed thousands of warriors and their horses, an entire army designed follows its emperor into eternity.
The army can be found in three separate underground pits that are still being excavated until today.
The first Pit is the largest of all three pits so far. It contains around 6000 warriors and many chariots, although many of the chariots have disintegrated into the ground, replicas can be seen in the last photo.
The second pit is certainly smaller than the first, and contains about 1600 cavalry and horses.
The third pit so far has given about 70 soldiers mainly because they are in a worse state than the other pits..
