Photos from the South Island of New Zealand
Much more arid than the North Island, this part of New Zealand is truly spectacular. A drive around the island can take anywhere between one to three weeks depending on how detailed you want your trip to be. I drove from Picton to the west coast, then across the island through Cromwell to the East coast, where I made my way back up to Picton to go back to the North Island. I took one week, but was able to see the major attractions along the way.
Driving around the South Island is a photographer's paradise, so many beautiful beaches, view points, and sites, that one ends up stopping very often to take photos or just smell the air.
Cape Foulwind was given it's name by captain Cook in 1770 because of the winds here. The lighthouse is one of the markers around this cape.
Many attractions such as this suspension bridge, jet boat tours on the river and water falls can be seen on the south Island.
Seals can be seen on lots of beaches around the island, and colonies exist in lots of places. The Western Weka (right) is a chicken sized bird that is commonly mistaken for a kiwi bird.
