China has a total of 56 different nationalities, each with their own race, language, and culture. The largest ethnic group in terms of population is the Han Chinese who are the Chinese you would see every day in the biggest cities. All other nationalities are officially designated as minorities, and are encouraged by the government to practice their culture, language, and religion. Most minority nationalities are exempt from the one baby policy in order to ensure that they continue to grow their people.
