Photos from New Zealand

One of the most beautiful places on earth, New Zealand has been isolated from the rest of the world for millions of years, this has resulted in a truly unique and exciting eco-system that is so fascinating to see. Unfortunately, over the last century, man has again destroyed much of this uniqueness by introducing alien species of plants, animals, and insects, whether intentionally or involuntarily through decades of human migration. One of the biggest victims of this change has been the Kiwi bird. New Zealand's symbol, a bird which all New Zealanders call themselves after (Kiwis), is a bird so rare now, that most Kiwis have never seen one in the wild.

The New Zealand government however is making every effort to restore the Kiwi eco-system to it's original grandeur. Making sure no more foreign species are brought into the country, growing Kiwi birds and letting them go back into the wild, decreasing the Opossums that were introduced by man and that have been one of the main reasons for the decline in Kiwi bird population. They have also assigned islands and restricted access to them to leave as a sanctuary for native New Zealand wildlife.

New Zealand is also unique in that it is on top of one of the thinnest layers of crust on earth, which means more visible and active volcanic activities, such as those seen in Rotorua and other areas.

New Zealand Landscape is very interesting, the New Zealand fern can be seen almost everywhere, and is the symbol used for the national airline Air New Zealand.

The weta (don't know if this is the correct spelling) is an insect that I think is unique to New Zealand, it gets to gigantic sizes, and even though it is completely harmless, I am terrified of it, thank God it lives in caves. Deer is also very common in New Zealand.
