Photos from Crater Lake - Oregon - United States
Crater Lake lies in a volcanic basin (Caldera) that was created when the 12,000 foot high mount Mazama collapsed 7,700 years ago following a large eruption. Humans probably witnessed the cataclysmic eruption; nevertheless, local Indians said nothing about the crater lake to trappers and pioneers, who did not find it until 1853. One of the most beautiful and readily accessible mountain locations I've ever been to, Crater lake can be driven around and is truly worth a visit.
I was recently flying from San Francisco to Vancouver and flew over Crater lake, I have to say it also looks beautiful from the air.
The crater as seen from the rim drive. The island is called Wizard Island.
